Student Learning Approaches: Beyond Assessment Type to Feedback and Student Choice

Student Approaches to Learning (SAL) have been the focus of much research, typically linking different approaches, e.g., surface and deep, assessment types. However, previous research has not considered conditions under which types occur feedback they attract. In current study, UK university students were allocated one two (Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) or short essay). Half participants then given choice receiving a grade written feedback, whilst other half randomly Participants required learn specific material complete an assessment. Study time, notetaking approaches analysed along with SAL, measured using Process Questionnaire. Results indicated that performed better when completed MCQs expected receive feedback. There no significant differences in preferences between was relationship assessment, type however, interaction effects suggest where choice, those who choose exhibit deeper learning. This study is first demonstrate, albeit artificial learning activity, expect may impact on their outcomes SAL advance Furthermore, be moderated by student choice.
